Hello and welcome! I have recently relocated to Portland, Maine from Rochester, Minnesota and serve the wedding and portrait photography needs of Maine, Minnesota and beyond. This is the place to check out my most recent work and to get a glimpse into my life. Feel free to take a look around, I'd love to connect with you!

Brianne + Aaron

My dear friend got married.  And I got to be one of her bridesmaids.  I left my big camera at home (Katie was in charge of the real photos) but I remember life better with pictures so out came the iPhone (plus it fit way better in my pocket…did I mention my dress had POCKETS!?).  My life revolves around the technicalities of taking wedding photos but there’s something I love about these.  Little imperfect snippets throughout the day.  Brianne + Aaron, I loved being a part of your wedding.  I loved getting all gussied up and wearing a pretty dress (with pockets!).  I loved seeing you smile the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen you smile.  All day long.  I loved seeing you walk down the aisle as a Berge and up the aisle as a Hill.  I loved seeing your family’s skit after skit after skit.  I loved seeing your dad tear up during his speech.  I loved your brother’s song to you.  I love our memories together and I love being your friend.  Congratulations, Berge and Aaron.  xoxo

Lame

I know it’s lame to talk about complain about this weather.  So maybe we should just all crawl under the covers until the sun comes out again.  Anyone?

29

Birthdays are fun.  I had one on Sunday! Here’s a quick recap:

1.  Breakfast in bed.  Yup…cinnamon crunch bagel and coffee from Panera.
2.  A birthday note from Ike.  Something about I ruff you…
3.  Facebook has revolutionized birthdays.  I know it’s kind of impersonal but I still love it.  An overflowing wall of birthday wishes can’t help but make a girl smile.
4.  Handwritten notes and cute homemade gifts.
5.  Crazy beautiful flowers from my talented floral artist friend.  (See more of her flower designs in this post)
6.  Turning our closet into a darkroom to play with my gift from Justin!  It is the Stenoflex, a pinhole camera and darkroom in a box!  As you can see my darkroom skills are a little rusty but it sure was fun!
7.  Dinner with friends and random 40th birthday balloons that seemed appropriate to take a picture with.
8.  Mail and fun cards.
9.  Ike.
10.  Berry dessert from Chesters.  Y.U.M.
11.  More flowers from J.
12.  Family photo!

iPhone life

I rarely go anywhere without my camera, or at least a camera of some sort.  And I do count the camera on my iPhone.  Though I do enjoy shooting for myself, it’s often not practical to carry a huge camera around all the time and sometimes, it’s nice to disconnect for awhile.  But I cannot turn off my camera brain very easily and I constantly see things I think are pretty or inspiring or that I want to remember so out comes the iPhone.

I love how imperfect it is and I love how I don’t feel the need to Photoshop it and how I have the most everyday moments recorded so I don’t forget the random days in between the bigger and more documentable days.  And let’s face it, Ike does something really cute at least twice a day and I certainly don’t want to forget that.

I have two favorite photo apps for my iPhonography :  ShakeItPhoto and Pocketbooth.

These are from our most recent trip to the Bahamas and were made using the ShakeItPhoto app.  The best part about it, you really do have to shake your phone.  And consider yourself warned: it is impossible to do this and not get the “shake it like a polaroid picture” part of that OutKast song stuck in your head.

And these are from a random day made on PocketBooth:

Cheers to capturing ordinary life!

p.s. After you accumulate over 800 photos on your phone, it tends to run reeeeeally slow.  I’m just saying…

Not your average Sunday…

I was going to write this cutesy little post about my sweet dog and how he stayed by me all weekend while I was sick.  Picture included, of course.  Then you could talk to your computer screen in your best doggie voice and tell him what a nice dog he is and then write me pity comments for being sick.  The truth is, I was sick and Ike did follow me from the couch, to the bathroom, to the bed repeatedly and it was heartwarming.  But after Sunday afternoon, I have other things on my mind.

Because I was sick and had some work at the office that I needed to do, Justin offered to go get it for me and bring it home.  Awww thanks, sweet husband!  He left and about 20 minutes later, sent me a text that worried me and then didn’t answer when I tried calling him 14 times.  *Emily starts to freak out*  So I shoved my sweat pants into some boots and put on a hat to cover the sickly bed head I had going on and drove down to the office.  Of course thinking the worst, but trying to convince myself I’m overreacting, Justin called back when I was about a block away.

Apparently two guys were able to pick the lock in the lobby and then made their way to our floor.  After knocking and trying to open our locked door, they started trying to break in using a screwdriver.  Justin propped his weight against the door and called 911 and as soon as they heard him talking to the police, they ran.

My emotions have gone from freaked out to angry, back to freaked out to really angry, finally settling on feeling pity for those men.  I will never understand the thrill that people get from violating other people.  If you really wanted a canvas, we could have worked something out!  🙂

I’m not sure why I’m writing about this.  Partly to get it off my chest, partly to say I’m frustrated and partly to say I’m thankful.  I’m thankful because this is the best case scenario.  Justin is not hurt.  No one else is hurt.  And I will continue to believe that people are innately good.  But we’re getting better locks.  And stuff.

Christmas card material.

Well, our Christmas cards have been designed, then designed again because I’m indecisive, and are ordered.  Whew.  It’s questionable whether or not they will get addressed, postmarked and land in mailboxes before Christmas but I’m gonna give it my best.

For a long time, I’ve refused to dress up my dog.  This year, I caved.  And I caved BAD. Santa hat, jingle collar AND elf shoes?!  Oh the shame.  After Ike looked at me with those eyes, I just couldn’t send it out as the Christmas picture.  So I decided to post them  on my blog instead.  So much better.

Because I know you were dying to see them up close.

2 minutes after the Christmas gear was removed, I found Ike hiding.  With the most pissed off dog eyes imaginable.
Happy Howl-idays!
